My Favourite Posts of 2014

By the time this post goes up, I'll already be on an overnight train to Puri with my parents, uncles, aunts, my brothers and my sister. Huuuge family, right? Anyway so this is my second my in the Best of 2014 series and today I'll be sharing with you my 5 favourite posts I've written this year.

I talked about the day I was harassed and threatened by 3 students of the Students Union because I tried to stop them from disrupting our class event. The memory still haunts me now.

Best Blogging Moments 2014

2014 has been such a roller-coaster ride for me. I had some pretty good moments and some equally crazy bad ones. But if I were to describe this year in one word, I'll say "productive". Okay, maybe they weren't supertastic breakthrough moments. Neither did I stop procrastinating (I know, duh!). But honestly, I feel really good about the things I did this year.

So for the next 3 days, I'll be posting a "Best of 2014" roundup of all the things I've done so far. But first, let's talk about blogging. *cue belly roll*

My All-Time Favourite Holiday Films

One of my favourite things to do every Christmas is binge watching films. We have a marathon of holiday-ish films on all our channels and it's SO much fun. So now that Christmas is only 1..2 days away (holy hell, only 2 more days to go!), I thought I should share a list of my all-time favourite holiday films.

Home Alone 1, 2, 3

I love love love the Home Alone series. I've watched and re-watched the films SO many times, and it still gets me every time. I actually have this weird wish that I'll get into a similar Christmas-y trouble too. But then again, my parents will probably throw me out for destroying the house. *wicked laugh*

. . . . And Then I Was Harassed In College

Hello. My name is Somdyuti. I'm 19 years old. I was harassed in college because I stood up against the wrong. And this is my story.

But before I tell you about it, you should know that the girl in photo isn't me. It's just a photo I snatched off Pinterest because well, it seemed to suit well with my story. Whatever.

A November In Shantiniketan

I would have published this post a LONG time back had not my computer been such pathetic wreck for weeks. So I took a little trip with my parents to Shantiniketan last November. For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to visit it. It's a small town near Bolpur in Birbhum district, West Bengal.

For us Bengalis, Shantiniketan is more than just another town. It is as much a symbol of literature and creative arts as it is for crafts and culture. But most importantly, Shantiniketan still stands as the town where Rabindranath Tagore (Bengali poet and Nobel laureate) once lived and composed many brilliant masterpieces.

And thus began our 2 day vacation in Shantiniketan.

My Writing Process

Before I start this post, I'll just pause and say how guilty I feel for ignoring my blog. I just got really caught up with NaNoWriMo. You know, National Novel Writing Month a.k.a November. Ofcourse, no one warned me how crazy it actually is (read: writing a 50,000 words novel in 30 days). So naturally, right now I'm juggling my *cough* novel *cough*, my college, my upcoming tests and this blog. So today, I'll write a quick post before burying myself in books.

This post was been due for quite some time. So I'll just get straight to the point. I was tagged by Noor from Noor's Place to do the The Writing Process tag. Well, as the name says I'll shed some light on the not-so-boring-but-still-awesome things that happen behind the scene blog.

My 7 Superstitions

I don't really believe in any superstitions. But there are a few things I do follow because erm... I don't want bad-luck. As a matter of fact, I am really terrified of bad juju. Bad karma, if you must know. So just to be on the "safer" side of luck, here are my few superstitions-

A Letter To My Younger Self

Dear 10-year-old Somdyuti,

Oh hello there, little me. I'm happy you're living life in your own rhythm, falling and healing on the way. I know how you always get bullied by those meanies because you can't fight back. But hey, don't worry. This will pass. You know why? Because in a few years, you're going to amaze them by the person you'll become. So yay!

Who Would Play Me In A Movie

An absolutely honest confession: I've wondered what it might be like if anyone ever makes a film about my life. Now that I think of it, perhaps it won't be a very good movie. Maybe it will sink at the theatre or people will walk out at interval. Oh, whatever. I'm still going to go ahead with it.

As it turns out, I don't think I have any celebrity look-alike. So I'll just share 3 of my favourite actresses who I think will make a great movie version of me because umm... we share some common traits? Okay, yeah scratch that.

One Beauty Product I Can't Live Without

Can I be really honest? I have zero idea about anything to do with makeup. Here's the thing: my idea of makeup is kajal and lip-balm. I can hardly wear an eye-liner. Let alone anything else. So yes, my knowledge about "beauty stuff" is quite limited.

5 Insta-Awesome Photo Editing Apps I Love

I love a good photo. Be it a fish, sunset or a portrait. I love bright, crisp pictures that erm.. speak (not literally, ofcourse). I think it's partly why I'm always curious to know what apps, software or camera other people are using. Pfft... if only I could take half as decent a photo that isn't blurred or just bad. But ofcourse, once in a while a photo turns out to be surprisingly good.

So today, I'll share my favourite photo-editing tools that have saved my life photos more than once.

My 13 Pet Peeves

I'm a very moody person by nature. Yeah. It doesn't take long for me to get irritated. I think I'm irritated almost always over something or the other. Sometimes I think the world is plotting against me *in hushed voice*. So by all means, bear with me. This will be a long one.

Dream Vacation

I have a tiny confession: I have a HUGE wishlist of cities and countries I want to visit. Maybe it's slightly next to impossible. But if I can even tick off atleast one from the list, I'll be a happy bird.

My Biggest Fear

Umm no. I'm not scared of cats. I love cats. This seemd like an appropriate picture to use in the post. So yeah, whatever. Since we are talking about fears, I have 3 kinds of answers for you: a rational answer, a serious answer and well, some not-so-serious answer.

What Makes Me Happy

You know that feeling when you see a HUGE sale or an entry pass to your favourite event or I don't know... maybe when you spot your favourite celebrity? That's the kind of rush I get when I see books. My heart, mind, body, limbs all go jelly.

Secret For A Secret?

I love secrets *in a hushed voice*. Ofcourse I don't intend to create a Burn Book similar to Mean Girl or anything. Because that's pure mean evil. As for me, I happen to be slightly suppressed when it comes to secrets. I usually keep them to myself or bore my best friend with it. I've certainly never shared any on my blog. But today's your lucky day because I'm about to spill one.

15 Things I'm An Expert At...

I probably don't want to come off as a narcissist talking about the stuff I'm an expert at. Because: a) It's an overstatement in my case, b) I'm quite lazy to "become an expert at something". Unless you consider procrastination as an expertise too. So after a lot of thinking, here's a list of things I'm an expert at...

Favourite Quote

I have too many favourite quotes to pick just one. There are quotes from books I've read, and films I've watched and TV shows I'm obsessed about. And then there are quotes from famous personalities and alike. But for now, I'll restrict myself to one quote which is very special to me.

Funniest Childhood Memory

I was never big on pranks or mischief as a kid. I got pranked instead. So I don't really have too many funny childhood memories worth sharing. But there is this one particular memory that tickles me everytime. It's quite embarrassing when I think of it now. *cringe*

Best Advice I've Been Given

*in Avril Lavigne's voice*
Hey hey, you you, today is my birthday
No way, no way, you know it's not a secret
Hey hey, you you, today is my birthday

Pardon me, I just improvised. What can I say? I love birthdays. It's not everyday that I'll turn 19. I mean, I'm not ready to kiss my teenagers years goodbye already. Hint: This is exactly why I wouldn't make a very good adult. *sigh*

I Never Thought Blogging Would...

Of all the things I thought may or may not happen in the last 2 years, blogging certainly wasn't one of them. Like really. I had never considered the possibility of starting my blog (again!). Let alone taking it up seriously. But I did, and for once I'm so proud of the decision I took. *pats in the back*

I've had good moments, bad moments, so-annoyed-I-might-smack-someone moments and pretty much everything in between. And I love every bit of it, even the parts I don't like. With that in mind, here we go-wo-wo. I never thought blogging would...

Looking Back: Durga Puja 2014

Durga Puja is by far the biggest and the only festival we Bengalis truly look forward to. Just a quick introduction if you aren't familiar with it. Durga Puja (puja means "festival") is a Hindu festival celebrated (usually in September/October) for 5 days to worship goddess Durga, or Maa Durga as we call her. It's widely celebrated in Eastern India among Bengali Hindus (that's us).

As the story goes, every year Maa Durga comes down to the mortal world (her home) with her 4 children and lives for a week. After that, she departs to heaven (her husband's home) again.

10 Things I Wish I Told Myself When I Started Blogging

I set up my first blog when I was 12. It was more like an account of all my poems I had ever written for our school magazine till then (eg: I have cat/ She sleeps on a mat/ She likes to play ball/ And loves to chew my doll...). You get the point. Whatever, I closed it after a year or so. It wasn't until 2 years ago that I started blogging again. But obviously, I quit it this October because everything was all over the place and I wanted to start afresh. Ergo, I come with quite a bit of messed-up blogging history.

But honestly, if I were do it all over again, here's what I'd tell myself...

I don't quite remember where I first read "101 Things in 1001 Days" but I knew I HAD to make mine too.

Dream Job: Then VS. Now

Making decisions was never my strongest asset. Infact, I'm awful at it. I either make too hasty decisions (and eventually regret them) or really lame/stupid decisions. So either way, they hardly ever work out. With this story in mind, let's talk about dream jobs..
